QME (Qualified Medical Evaluator)

A QME is a physician certified by Division of Workers’ Compensation in California to perform neutral medical evaluations when the parties are unable to agree on an opinion. QMEs are selected from a specialty-specific panel and are commonly used when applicants are not represented by an attorney.

QME — Attorney/Applicant Advantages:

  • Serves a key function in determining workers’ compensation benefits during the settlement process.
  • Follows a state-regulated, standardized method for panel selection and report preparation.

IME (Independent Medical Evaluation)

An IME is a medical evaluation performed by a physician who is not involved in the patient’s care, with the goal of providing an independent and objective assessment of the individual’s medical condition. Unlike QMEs and AMEs, IMEs are not affiliated with the Division of Workers’ Compensation and are subject to fewer regulatory requirements.

IME — Attorney/Applicant Advantages:

  • Delivers an independent medical opinion that can support or dispute a claim.

  • Helps clarify issues such as causation, treatment necessity, and functional capacity.
